CIWM (Chartered Institution of Wastes Management) has said it is disappointed that resource efficiency is not on the COP28 agenda in a “meaningful way”.
Taking place between 30 November and 12 December 2023 at Expo City in Dubai, the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP28, is the 28th United Nations Climate Change conference.
Lee Marshal, Policy and External Affairs Director said: “On the eve of COP28, we are disappointed that resource efficiency still has not made it onto the COP agenda in a meaningful way. This is particularly concerning given the vital role sustainable resources and waste management will play in protecting our planet.”
Ahead of COP 28, Reconomy has called for global action to accelerate the transition to the circular economy to hit climate change objectives.
Achieving CIWM’s purpose of a world beyond waste is something the participants of COP28 should be working towards.
Diane Crowe, Head of Group Sustainability at Reconomy, commented: “We need to see greater emphasis on the transition to a circular economy to preserve our finite resources. Doing so can help the UK and global economies manufacture, produce and consume more efficiently so that we can meet the targets established by the Paris Agreement.
“Developing a laser focus on circularity at globally collaborative events like COP 28 can provide the trigger we need to embed its importance in economies across the world.”
Marshall concluded his statement by saying: “Achieving CIWM’s purpose of a world beyond waste is something the participants of COP28 should be working towards, and it is imperative that better resources and waste management is prioritised in climate actions plans and nationally determined contributions.
“Resource efficiency is a policy area that requires more focus, we would like to see it given the attention it deserves at COP summits and beyond.”
