Five local charities in Torbay have benefitted from £6,000 worth of donations from local residents who are part of the recycling rewards scheme, Torbay Green Points.
The scheme rewards residents with discounts in local businesses, vouchers for themselves and community donations for recycling more and wasting less. Residents are divided into five communities depending on where they live, and are encouraged to earn as many ‘Green Points’ for their community as possible by reporting their recycling and taking part in online waste and recycling modules.
The more Green Points each community earns, the bigger the share of £6,000 they receive for their favourite charity at an annual prize giving event. Residents were invited to vote for the charity they’d like their community to support from a shortlist.
This year, Rowcroft Hospice received the biggest donation from residents in the top performing community, Community B; in the West of the borough, and was awarded the top prize of £2,250. Runners up RNLI received £1,500 and Anode received £1,000. In fourth place was Torbay Street Pastors who received £750 and in fifth was the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust who received £500.
Councillor Mark King, Executive Lead for Planning, Transport and Housing, presented the charities with their cheques in the grounds at Rowcroft Hospice. He said: “Torbay Recycling Rewards is a great scheme as it motivates residents to recycle and gives them the opportunity to give back to their wider community. Their recycling efforts provide much-needed support to projects in the local area.”
Debbi Shotton from Rowcroft Hospice said “We’re thrilled to receive these donations from local residents here in Torbay. Thank you to everyone who voted for us, with your donations we can continue to make every day the best day possible for families living with life-limiting illnesses in South Devon; helping them to share tears, cuddles and precious moments together.”
Since launching in 2015, over 4,700 households have joined Torbay Green Points to reap rewards for their recycling efforts.
