Kidlington – a village located between the River Cherwell and the Oxford Canal – has had a 20-tonne weight lifted off its shoulders following a council cleanliness initiative.
Five Cherwell District Council workers spent last week (beginning Monday, 18 September) removing litter, graffiti and bulky waste as part of the Kidlington blitz. They gathered over 11 tonnes of litter using mechanical sweepers and nearly two tonnes by hand.
One hundred and forty households took up the offer of free bulky waste collections, which entitled them to have up to three large items removed per home. This saw the removal of nearly seven tonnes of white goods, furniture and other waste.
Cllr Debbie Pickford, Cherwell’s lead member for clean and green, said: “We’re really pleased that so many villagers in Kidlington have made the most of this great free offer as part of the neighbourhood blitz. Using the bulky waste service can often save a trip to the tip and I recommend it to anyone who’s got large items to get rid of.
“The street cleansing team has worked really hard to get Kidlington’s streets and public spaces looking their very best, and it is a hugely impressive volume of waste they have removed. I hope the blitz helps motivate people to keep the village looking its best in the months to come.”
The next neighbourhood blitz will take place during the week beginning Monday, 20 November, in Bretch Hill, Banbury.
