65% of Brits believe retailers should offer reuse and refill systems

65% of people in Britain believe all retailers should be offering reuse and refill systems and moving away from single-use plastics, new research from GoUnpackaged shows.

The survey of 2,000 UK adults found that 68% of consumers are likely to incorporate reuse and refill systems into their weekly shop when they are made convenient. This rose to 77% among shoppers aged 18-34.

50% of those surveyed said they actively prefer to shop with brands that implement reuse and refill systems, and 45% said they would choose retailers prioritising reuse over those that don’t.

However, 54% of consumers said they struggle to find reuse or refill options at their regular supermarkets, and 47% find the schemes “confusing or difficult to navigate”.

Around 40% of shoppers said they would use reuse and refill systems so they have less waste packaging to deal with at home.

Commenting on the research, Catherine Conway, Director at GoUnpackaged, said: “Single-use packaging is a liability, with shoppers favouring brands and retailers that align with more eco-conscious values.

“The findings are a wake-up call to make reuse systems simple, accessible, and appealing to consumers.

“With sustainability expectations soaring, and loyalty hinging on environmental responsibility, retailers that lead the charge in sustainable practices will secure their place in a greener future.”
