Circular economy: delivering ambition and impact in Wales
Opening the programme at the CIWM Resource Conference Cymru is Chair of WRAP Sebastian Munden.
Kicking off the day’s action, Munden will take delegates through the work currently being done to embed circularity into the Welsh economy.
A case study in circular thinking – Royal Mint
To showcase how the circular economy can work in Wales, this session will explore a case study from the Royal Mint. Steve Clode, Head of Operational Transformation and COMAH, Royal Mint, will explore how the company views, uses and handles materials, including recovering Gold from WEEE, in their operations.
Clode’s presentation will look at the Royal Mint’s vision, process and the future of the company’s operations, as well as how circular thinking can be scaled up. The session will also examine the problem the make-take-dispose economy presents to the Royal Mint and the opportunity of the circular economy.
Policies to facilitate the Welsh circular economy
All the best will in the world can’t make a fully circular economy in Wales a reality. It will be a combined effort between consumers, producers and government.
In this session, delegates will hear the latest thinking from the Welsh government’s Head of Waste Strategy Dr. Andy Rees OBE on the policies being looked at in detail today.
Rees will also explore how government are working to build on the success of the nation’s high recycling rates.
What quality materials look like in the circular economy
What do quality materials look like in the circular economy? What the world produces to sustain the make-take-dispose economy is clear – they’re sitting all around us. However, a question on a lot of people’s lips is what do quality materials look like in the circular economy?
Manager (Steel Packaging Recycling) – Tata Steel, the event’s headline sponsor, Nicola Jones, explores how the company is tackling issues around material quality. Jones will also look at how the quality of a material can impact the possible uses and its ability to be seen as truly circular.
How regulation can help facilitate the Circular Economy – NRW
In this thought-provoking session from Natural Resources Wales (NRW) Senior Specialist, Lara Moggridge will look at the important role regulation has to play to support the waste industry in delivering a true environmentally robust circular economy.
The session from the NRW’s Moggridge will also look at some of the challenges faced for delivering a circular economy and how regulation can help tackle them. As well as how regulation will help with material flows and processing to keep materials in use.
Moggridge’s presentation will also cover how to raise standards in the waste industry to achieve a cradle-to-cradle approach and realise waste as a resource.
