Conwy County Borough Council says it will fine households who continue not to recycle as it begins offering support to residents to show them how to sort and recycle their waste.
Residents can ask for a member of the Council’s team to visit them in their home, to show them how to sort and recycle their rubbish, which is to support the most vulnerable people within the community.
If any households ignore the support offered and continue to recycle very little or nothing at all, the Council says it will issue them with a fixed penalty notice of £100. The Council does not specify what it classes as “very little” recycling volume.
The Welsh local authority has launched the new campaign, “Keeping up with the Joneses”, focused on households that currently recycle very little or nothing at all.
No-one wishes to take enforcement action, but it’s unfair on the whole community if a few households continue not to recycle.
Councillor (Cllr) Geoff Stewart, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and the Environment, commented: “No-one wishes to take enforcement action, but it’s unfair on the whole community if a few households continue not to recycle, if everyone else is.
“Don’t worry though, as this will only affect those households who don’t make the effort to recycle much or at all. Our objective is that everyone should recycle their waste responsibly. Those that don’t already should join their neighbours in doing this for their community.”
The local authority is urging those that don’t recycle not to wait for a warning letter and either start recycling now or contact the council for support.
Conwy County Borough Council says it will help residents understand:
- What they can and can’t recycle.
- What bags, bins or boxes they may need and how to order them online if they don’t have them.
- When their recycling (and any other leftover waste that can’t be recycled) will be collected.
