2000 sign petition against booking system for recycling sites

Household Waste Recycling Sites

A petition against the introduction of a booking system at Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRS) across East Sussex has been signed by over 2,000 people.

The Lewes Liberal Democrats, who launched the petition, say they have concerns that a booking system would make waste disposal more difficult, especially for people without internet access or making urgent trips.

East Sussex County Council said switching to a booking system could help save £50,000 a year, as well as reduce queue times and traffic around HWRSs.

The proposed change is part of the Council’s work to identify savings that can fill an expected £55 million funding gap in 2025.

Lewes Liberal Democrats are calling on East Sussex County Council to listen to what they claim are the growing number of residents who are urging them to keep the current walk-in system.

Cllr Carolyn Lambert, Lib Dem County Councillor for Seaford South, commented: “The introduction of a booking system risks creating unnecessary barriers to proper waste disposal.

“We’ve heard from residents across East Sussex who are worried this will complicate their lives and lead to an increase in fly-tipping.

“This is a clear message from the community: we want to keep waste disposal simple, efficient, and accessible for everyone.”
