John Lewis has teamed up with the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to give customers the opportunity to donate their used laptops, tablets, PC’s and mobile phones to a good cause.
Customers are invited to bring their electrical goods in store where data on functioning devices will be erased free of charge using software from technology company Blancco.
The BHF will re-sell any suitable devices, donating 100% of the profits to their life saving research to fight coronary heart disease, the UK’s single biggest killer.
Electrical goods which can’t be reused will be recycled responsibly.
“We really hope the trial is a success so together we can fund more life saving heart research to help the 7 million people currently living with heart and circulatory disease in the UK.”
The three month trial, which runs until the end of August, will take place at the John Lewis shops in Leeds and York.
James Prince, Branch Manager, John Lewis Leeds, said: “We are excited to be working with the British Heart Foundation on this scheme. It’s a great way to encourage local customers to recycle their electronic equipment while also helping to fund this critical research.”
Karen O’Donoghue, Retail Partnership Manager, BHF, adds: “We are very excited to be working with John Lewis. It’s a fantastic way for their customers to pass on their unwanted laptops, mobile phones and tablets and support our fight against heart disease.
“We really hope the trial is a success so together we can fund more life saving heart research to help the 7 million people currently living with heart and circulatory disease in the UK.”
The trial forms part of a broader EU LIFE 2014 funded project designed to tackle the huge quantities of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) disposed annually.
Customers interested in donating unwanted electrical goods can drop off items at the Technical support area in the Technology department of either the Leeds or York John Lewis shops.
