Biffa has signed a £3 million zero-waste-to-landfill collection and disposal contract with sustainable packaging company DS Smith.

As part of the contract, Biffa said it will collect and manage around 15,000 tonnes of waste from over 30 DS Smith sites across the UK each year for the next three years.

The contract includes 20 waste streams, including general waste, dry-mixed recyclables, food to ink, mixed wood, and liquid waste.

Commenting on the announcement, Maxine Mayhew, Chief Operating Officer (Collections & Specialist Services), Biffa, said: “This is a fantastic group-wide contract that’s a real testament to the strength of our service offering as the UK’s leading sustainable waste management provider.”

Biffa said its ultimate goal is a circular economy in which waste and emissions continue to be reduced by moving higher up the waste hierarchy.

The waste management company said it will work with DS Smith to achieve its goal of sending zero waste to landfill by 2030.

Paul Clarke, Managing Director for UK and Ireland Packaging Division, DS Smith, commented: “Sustainability remains a key driver for us, and we are happy to work with an organisation that specialises in sustainable waste management solutions.

“Part of our mission is to keep materials in use for longer and we have demonstrated that by replacing more than one billion pieces of plastic over a year ahead of target.

“Through this new deal with Biffa, we are helping tackle one of our ‘Now & Next’ sustainability goal of sending zero waste to landfill by 2030.”
