Cathedral City launches Britain’s first cheese packaging recycling programme

British cheese maker Cathedral City is working to help cut the proportion of flexible plastic cheese packaging that currently ends up in landfills across the UK.

Cathedral City is launching The Cheese Packaging Recycling Programme with TerraCycle on behalf of all cheese producers.

The programme will allow cheese fans to recycle any flexible plastic cheese packaging from any brand or supermarket, not just Cathedral City. The waste that is recycled will also help raise money for ‘good causes’, the brand says.

Once collected, the plastic waste will be shredded, washed and then pelletized. These pellets can be used for a number of moulded rigid plastic products like benches, or used as film for products such as waste bags.

Not only are we helping the environment, but the packaging we recycle will also help raise money for good causes.

Cathedral City commented: “As the nation’s favourite cheese brand, Cathedral City is committed to reducing its impact on the planet.

“We’re working hard to achieve our ambition to make our flexible cheese packaging fully recyclable by 2022.

“In the meantime, we are partnering with TerraCycle to allow consumers to recycle any flexible plastic cheese packaging from any brand or supermarket, not just Cathedral City.

“Not only are we helping the environment, but the packaging we recycle will also help raise money for good causes.”

The announcement comes as WRAP warns more needs to be done to develop a recycling system for soft flexible plastic packaging.
