CIWM “Scoping Out” Apprenticeship Opportunities For Sector

Calling for a renewed focus on skills across the resources and waste sector, CIWM has announced that its training arm has been approved for inclusion on the Education and Skills Funding Agency’s register of apprenticeship training providers (RoATP).

The register details all the organisations that are approved to deliver apprenticeship training for employers through the Government’s Apprenticeship Levy scheme.

As the professional body for the sector, CIWM says skills are a priority for the Institution, not only in the context of supporting the professional development of its members but also in ensuring that the sector as a whole has the “skills it needs as to manage and deliver the transition from waste to resource management and more circular economic practices”.

Anna Havard, CIWM – “CIWM is scoping out what the resource and waste sector needs in terms of information, advice and support to capitalise on the opportunities offered by the levy scheme, and explore how it can complement existing training and development strategies.”

“This is an important opportunity to upskill the sector’s workforce across a range of disciplines but we do know that some employers are struggling to understand the Apprenticeship Levy scheme’s rules and restrictions and access the funding,” says Anna Havard, CIWM’s product and business development manager.

“As a first step, therefore, CIWM is scoping out what the resource and waste sector needs in terms of information, advice and support to capitalise on the opportunities offered by the levy scheme, and explore how it can complement existing training and development strategies.”

CIWM is also part of an employer-led group that is developing new waste management and recycling Trailblazer Apprenticeship standards.

The proposal for a Level 2 Waste & Resource Operative Apprenticeship is progressing towards the approval stage and the Level 4 Resource Technical Manager is now due for development.
