HMRC statistics show the total provisional Landfill Tax (LFT) receipts for 2022 to 2023 was £626 million, which is 6% (£41 million) lower than the previous financial year.
The data also showed LFT tonnage declared for the financial year ending 2023 was 22,354 thousand tonnes – 421 thousand tonnes (2%) lower than the previous financial year. Total tonnage has been on a downward trend over the last 10 years, according to the data.
LFT receipts have reduced year-on-year since 2014. The only exception was the financial year ending 2021, which was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. After a rise in receipts the following year, receipts for the financial year ending 2023 are continuing the downward trend.
Since the financial year ending 2014, LFT receipts have fallen by over £500 million. LFT rates have increased year-on-year over this time, the standard rate charged has increased from £72.00 per tonne in April 2013 to £102.10 per tonne in April 2023.
The data from HMRC also shows that standard rate tonnage as a proportion of total tonnage has fallen from 48% in the financial year ending 2014 to 29% in the financial year ending 2023. The UK government says lower rate tonnage has shown a “downward trend” over the last 10 years with the lowest level over this period in the financial year ending 2023.
