New Hovis Labels Aim To Increase Bread Bag Recycling

Hovis is launching clearer labelling to drive awareness of the fact its bread bags are 100% recyclable and to encourage more consumers to recycle, it says.

The new labelling includes clear communication on the back of the bag, encouraging consumers to dispose of their bread bags at plastic bag collection points which are available at most major retailers’ stores.

The labelling (above) also clearly states that the bread is suitable for freezing, to encourage less consumer food waste.

Hovis will also be introducing a large recycling logo (pictured left) on the front of the bread bags which calls out “this bag is 100% recyclable”.

Whilst Hovis hopes to encourage more consumers to recycle at the designated collection points, it also hopes that, in time, councils will add plastic bags to their kerbside collection.

“As a business, Hovis is committed to sustainability and we are constantly working to reduce our own environmental impact as well as helping to educate our consumers.”

The new communication on its bread bags is just one of the steps the company is taking to reduce its impact on the environment, it says. Hovis has already installed more efficient route planning, a signatory of the Climate Change Levy in 2017, signed the Courtauld Commitment 2025, and is working with Zero Waste Scotland to develop a project on waste mapping for the Hovis Glasgow bakery.

Ceri Packard, Senior Brand Manager, Hovis said: “We are really excited to reveal our new labelling on pack, which demonstrates our commitment to the sustainability agenda and protecting the environment. Hovis research found that a third (31%) of people continue to find recycling difficult as they are unsure of what they can recycle (Source: Walnut Unlimited Market Research, March 2018. Research based on a study of 400 prepacked bread buyers).

“To do our part to change this, our aim is to encourage and educate consumers to dispose of their bread bags correctly via collection points at most major retailers’ stores. Hovis bread bags are easy to recycle and we are keen to see more people joining us in this initiative.

“As a business, Hovis is committed to sustainability and we are constantly working to reduce our own environmental impact as well as helping to educate our consumers.”
