New returnable cup scheme launches in Glasgow

Hubbub

New returnable cup scheme launched at 49 locations in Glasgow, including in Costa Coffee, Caffè Nero, Burger King and local cafes.

Borrow Cup, led by environmental charity Hubbub and reuse start-up Reposit, is a system to borrow and return a reusable cup from a cafe or restaurant.

Customers are eligible for discounts and extra loyalty points for using Borrow Cup at most participating locations, Hubbub says.

Borrow Cup will remain live at the 49 locations for an initial three-month period while its impact is measured, with plans to expand in the future if it is effective.

To participate in the scheme, a customer must pay a £1 deposit at the point of purchase. They are then able to swap the reusable cup for a clean one at participating locations.

Customers can either return the cup to the till of a participating location to retrieve their £1 deposit or drop-off the cup at a return point and scan a QR code to receive a £1 e-voucher.

Reposit collects the used cups before washing them at their facility and sending them back to participating stores.
