Renewi Reports Ambitious Targets In CSR Progress Update

International waste-to-product company, Renewi plc has reported steady Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) progress in the year ended 31 March 2018 and has announced ambitious new targets in its first full year CSR Report which was published today 2 July).

Renewi has three clear areas of focus for its CSR activities: keeping its people safe and well, protecting and preserving the planet and building strong partnerships in its local communities. In conjunction with its new values, Renewi’s CSR ambitions serve as a guiding principle for the realisation of its waste-to-product strategy.

Peter Dilnot, CEO at Renewi – “By working closely with our customers and suppliers, our people deliver our CSR initiatives every day”

The company improved its greater than three-day accident rate by 14% and also increased its near miss close out rate to 83%. Renewi has today announced plans to raise its safety standards to the best in the industry with a goal to operate to similar safety levels as construction and manufacturing which typically have much better safety records than the waste sector.

The company also focused on diversity and equality, increasing the number of female employees, in addition to growing female representation on its Board and Executive Committee.

Over the past year Renewi recycled or recovered a greater percentage of the waste that it handled, increasing its recycling and recovery rate to 89%.

Waste collection and recycling are typically activities that can have impact also on local communities. The company has focused on minimising the impact of its operations, reporting a 37% reduction in the number of environmental complaints received during the last year.

In addition to its existing 2020 CSR objectives, Renewi has launched more stretching targets to be achieved by 2023. These new targets support Renewi’s innovative Green Finance Framework and enable the company to benefit from lower interest rate payments by achieving the following objectives:

  • Overall recycling and recovery rate of 91% (89% in 2017/18)
  • 50% of truck fleet compliant with Euro VI standard (24% in 2017/18)
  • 220 Carbon avoidance intensity ratio (0.214 in 2017/18)
  • 1,130 >3-day accident rate (1,505 in 2017/18)
  • 05 Litres of fuel used per tonne waste collected (3.15 in 2017/18)

Peter Dilnot, CEO at Renewi said: “Our desire to create a sustainable world underpins the decisions we make and actions we take so I’m pleased to report that we are moving in the right direction with our environmental CSR objectives.

“By working closely with our customers and suppliers, our people deliver our CSR initiatives every day. Indeed, it is their commitment to and passion for our mission statement – Waste no more – that underpins our central role in the growing circular economy. We are looking forward to continuing this work over the coming year and to really making a difference to our people, planet and the societies we serve each day.”
