Viridor will be playing a crucial role in maximising the environmental credentials of one of Europe’s largest construction projects after securing the total waste management contract at Hinkley Point C.
The company will be working with EDF Energy and using its expertise to deliver a zero to landfill agreement which emphasises the waste hierarchy and the importance of resource management and the circular economy.
Working in collaboration with EDF Energy and all principal contractors across the nationally significant project in a two-year contract, Viridor will deliver integrated waste management services from the waste arising from the site and all associated infrastructure operations.
It will see food waste transferred to Viridor’s anaerobic digestion facility at Walpole in Somerset, mixed dry recycling sorted through the Priorswood Materials Recycling Facility in Taunton and non-recyclable waste to energy recovery facilities, including the Avonmouth Resource Recovery Centre once this is operational next year.

The education package will feature sustainability days to inform Hinkley contractors about how they can make a difference, asking them to “stop before you drop”. A Viridor team will visit the site to explain the recycling process and there will be inter office competitions, floor walks and signage to direct teams to put the Right Stuff in the Right Bin, ensuring no recycling opportunities are missed.

Viridor has also secured the HOST waste management contract for two new campuses for Hinkley Point C workers. The Hinkley Campus accommodating 500 people and Sedgemoor Campus with a further 1000.
