Yesterday (22 January) marked the start of construction for the North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP) in Edmonton.
North London Waste Authority (NLWA) has entered into a contract with Buckingham Group Contracting Limited who will prepare the site in advance of construction of a replacement Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) for the existing Energy from Waste (EfW) facility.
Preparatory works will include installing works accommodation for the team on designated areas of Lee Valley Regional Park and preparing the laydown area to provide space to support construction onsite. The works have been scheduled to take place over the next ten years and have been phased to allow the existing EfW facility to continue to operate during this time.

The current facility has served to generate electricity from north London’s waste for over 45 years and is reaching the end of its useful life. A decision to replace the facility with a new ERF that can supply both heat and power will continue to divert waste away from landfill and see improvements in the management of waste onsite. This will include a reuse and recycling centre open to the public and a recycling and fuel preparation facility.
As the site becomes busier NLWA are continually committed to constructing the Project safely, on time and on budget while also considering the needs of the community. A community liaison group has been formed to provide a regular forum for representatives of the community to meet the project team. This provides an opportunity to get detailed updates on the Project plans and to raise matters that are important to the people who live and work locally.
Construction activities will usually take place from 8am to 6pm on weekdays (Monday – Friday excluding Bank Holidays) and 8am -1pm on Saturdays. The new ERF facility is expected to become operational in 2025 and use advanced technology to offer a more efficient service to residents to deal with north London’s waste.
